New Methods and Instruments of Solar Observation
In this paper, Roberts discusses the current state and future of solar observations within the context of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957-1958. An international scientific collaboration designed to investigate several areas of study including solar activity, seismology, meteorology, the IGY even brought together Cold War adversaries to take advantage of recent scientific developments and combine observational resources. This led to an increased interest in atmospheric science and collaboration, including an investigation into creating a new national center for atmospheric research.
