New building for HAO and the Department of Astro-Geophysics at CU, 1960

Roberts helped establish and served as the first director of CU's Department of Astro-Geophysics which was founded in 1956. Roberts wrote of the department: "The University of Colorado has established a Department of Astro-Geophysics, the first of its kind, to be devoted to teaching and basic research on the influence of astronomical bodies on earth physics, with emphasis on solar physics and solar-terrestrial relations." Courses were taught by staff at the university, HAO, and the National Bureau of Standards, and students had access to all three research facilities as well as the stations set up in Boulder for the International Geophysical Year (IGY).
